History

Founded in 1826, C. Brewer & Co. was one of Hawaii's leading corporations with wide interest in the growing of sugar cane and macadamia nuts, and in other international agri-business activities. In early 2001, the shareholders of C. Brewer & Co. liquidated the companys assets, primarily for estate planning purposes. One of the companies in C. Brewers portfolio included Brewer Environmental Industries, LLC which was founded in 1890. Under C. Brewers ownership, BEI had been a $100 million dollar business which included an agricultural and industrial chemical distribution division, a trucking and truck sales division, and an independent power plant.

With the leadership of two of BEI's former executives, a group of local investors acquired substantially all of the assets of BEI. Despite the challenging economic environment, the investment group purchased the 100-employee distribution division in January 2002 and renamed the business BEI Hawaii. The truck sales and service division was acquired in July 2002 and renamed HT&T Hawaii.

Marathon Group was formed in January 2003 to hold the ownership interests of BEI Hawaii and HT&T Hawaii and to pursue further acquisition opportunities in the Hawaii market.

Today, Marathon Group includes the following companies:

  • BEI Hawaii, Hawaii's largest distributor of industrial chemicals and agricultural fertilizers
  • HT&T Hawaii, Hawaii's largest full-service heavy and medium-duty truck dealer with exclusive state-wide Peterbilt, Isuzu, Autocar, McNeilus and
